Interview with David Ireland

Art Practical

In this interview with Terri Cohn, Ireland shares concerns about certain ideas central to Conceptual art that led him to think about the importance of tools to his way of thinking about Conceptual art, bringing to mind Sol Lewitt’s notion of how “the idea becomes the machine that makes the art.” He talked in depth about the importance of the community of artists in San Francisco--Paul Kos, Howard Fried, and especially Tom Marioni--who became his friends and influenced his thinking and approach.
